About Debra
Hello! Nice to have you visiting my website!
So, here's a little bit about me.... I have been happily married since 2007 and had my one and only (amazing son) child in 2009, at the age of 40. MY MOM SERVED AS A DOULA OVER 35 YEARS AGO! Interestingly enough, this line of work has surrounded me throughout my life. My mother actually served as a labor doula for her best friend over 35 years ago, however, the word doula was not the common term used back then. She called herself a birth coach and supported her best friend in her labor. My mom's best friend has stated to me a few different times that she was so thankful for the support, as her husband couldn't handle being in the room with her while she was in labor- he couldn't stand to see her in pain. She also served as a postpartum doula for her friends back then.... TIMES ARE CHANGING...BACK TO THE WAY IT USED TO BE My, oh my, how times have changed...as we revert back to encouraging mothers to trust in their bodies to birth their babies, while offering continuous support during labor and delivery; and then, in the postpartum period, we encourage couples to trust their instincts, empowering them to believe they are absolutely capable of taking the best care of their babies, all the while educating them on the various and common certainties that arise during the postpartum periods. IT'S A FAMILY BUSINESS! Both of my sisters are doulas and one of them is also a licensed midwife, who opened up her Birth Center, PURE BIRTHS in Valencia in 2016. When I was in labor with my son, they were both there, alongside my husband, hands on, supporting me through 35+ hours of labor. I will never forget how supported and encouraged I felt. My birth story is as clear to me now as it was the day after the birth of my son. I have witnessed and experienced firsthand how important having support was during labor, delivery and during the postpartum period. It was after this amazing experience that I listened a little closer to the labor and postpartum experiences my sisters spoke about and felt myself more and more gravitated to this work. WHY I LOVE THIS WORK! I feel passionate about supporting women and families and I feel there is something humbling about being invited into a time in a family's life where they are the most vulnerable and doubting their ability and strength. I enjoy supporting families, which empowers them and allows them to become confident and to trust in their intuition and ultimately, to follow their instincts. I encourage them and watch them gain insight, as they apply effective skills. Witnessing them flourish in this newfound knowledge, as they travel through their own journey is truly AMAZING. |
